Liz & Kalli #23 Wacky

Hello and welcome to week #23 of the Liz and Kalli art project. We have been off kilter a bit here with busy summer schedules, so this posting comes on Wednesday instead of Tuesday. While I'm on the subject of busy summer schedules, you should know that for the next 2 weeks Kalli will be in Ohio visiting her family. When she returns we will likely do another Liz & Kalli Special Edition and then it will be back to business as usual. Ok, so let me tell you about this week's submissions. The word is wacky, Liz's in on the top and Kalli's is on the bottom. 

*Liz

I have these wacky cardboard hangers from the sixties that I found at a flea market a while ago. They are groovy gals with hair that winds its way into a hanger at the top. I scanned her in and then colored her hair and put her on a striped background for extra wackiness. I think she qualifies. 

*Kalli

Ha! I love Kalli's wacky drinking straw jewelry. Kalli claims that the word wacky was a bit of a stumper for her, but I think she nailed it. She says, "I ended up making a necklace and earring set out of materials I'd never use for my normal jewelry- plastic bendy straws and tape. I spend a lot of time working with semi-precious stones, crystals and expensive metals, but this is more like painted pasta shell jewelry like you make in kindergarten. It's kind of goofy and colorful, though not super beautiful!" Well, beautiful is a relative term, right?

Painted Flowers + Aqua Daisies

When I arrived home from our vacation on Sunday, a big fat envelope from Spoonflower was waiting for me. Among other things, there were two yards of ditzy floral organic cotton sateen fabric. Painted Flowers, on the left, and Aqua Daisies, on the right, are now available in fat quarter size in the Wonderfluff Shop. Pick some up for all of your bright and cheerful fabric needs. 

Liz & Kalli Special Edition

Whoa! I haven't been here in a while. We are back from vacation and life is moving at a mile a minute. We have a whole lot going on, not the least of which is buying a new car!! Plus, we are still a bit in vacation mode and fuzzy-brained. I'm sure we will get ourselves all up to speed only to turn around and head for my sister's wedding next weekend. Phew, well in the meantime, I want to take a breather and bring you this very special edition of Tuesdays, er Thursday, with Liz & Kalli. Before I left for vacation, Kalli and I decided that we would post a photo of something that we saw in the past week when I returned. Mine is on top and Kalli's is on bottom. I love the decidedly different feel of these two photos. On Ryan's birthday we explored the Natchez Trace Parkway, one of the most beautiful stretches of road in the country and definitely one of the most beautiful my eyes have seen. The parkway winds its way through the forrest and you can stop and ponder nature and waterfalls, just as I am doing above. Kalli's photo is such a sharp contrast with it's urban feel, lines and architectural details. She snapped this gem in Echo Park the other day and says, "I'm sure you can guess the brand." Oh yes, yes I can.

We're Going To Nashville

Just a quick note to let you know that I will be away from this space for the next week and half or so. Ryan and I are leaving for Nashville in the morning. We're going to kick it up at a few honky tonks and then head to coastal NC to visit my Mom- and Dad- in-law. We are finishing off the Southern Hospitality Tour with Ryan's cousin's wedding in DC next weekend. So it will be an action packed whirlwind trip, but we are so looking forward to getting out of Dodge and gaining a new perspective for a while. I'll be back in no time with some art and craft goodness and a special installment of Tuesdays with Liz and Kalli.

Liz & Kalli #22 Puzzle

Hello, it's Tuesdays with Liz and Kalli. This week the word is puzzle, Liz's is on the top and Kalli's is on the bottom. Interesting how similar these are. The word puzzle had me thinking of games and so I used the Trivial Pursuit wedges to create a little 3-D sculpture pattern. After a lot of fiddling and tweaking I'm pleased with this not quite symmetrical design. Kalli used game pieces too, pick-up-stix to be exact. She used to raid the game closet at her aunt and uncle's to find this game. It requires concentration and is a bit of a puzzle. They are both so bright, happy and sculptural!

A Table, a Chair, and a Bird

Hello there, friends. I hope everyone is enjoying a lovely and long holiday weekend. You may remember a while back when I told you about our trip to Portland for the Fourh of July. Well, it turns out that Ryan had some very important stuff happening at work this past week that he could not miss and so we were able to push the trip back to Labor Day. So, I have had a very long and leisurely weekend full of projects. Projects like the table above. About a year ago, Ryan and I went to a yard sale in Venice and a guy named Irwin sold us this incredible door. Which is now serving as our table top in the photo above. Irwin said that the door once hung in Jim Morrison's place on the Venice Beach Walk. In fact, this very door was The Doors' door! Whether the story is true or not is beside the point, I just love the story. It should be noted that the door is one of the coolest I've ever seen so I can imagine that it may have once belonged to Jim. I quite like the original character of this door and I wanted to keep remnants of its former life in tact, so the only touch up I did was to sand out some of the rough edges. I also gave it an exceptional long and thorough bath. I got a custom piece of glass cut downtown for a good price and then searched out a few random chairs to mix it up a bit. In the back against the wall we are using a painted cedar chest as a bench. Oh, and I got those table legs at Ikea. Ryan took this photo at golden hour.

When I was out on my wild chair chase, I found this cheapy, upholstered cast off and knew I could give it a brand new life with a little TLC. I painted it a shade known as Edwardian Linen (off white) and reupholstered the cushion with some of my recently printed Spoonflower home dec weight cotton. 

Also, these last few days, I was also able to work on this most colorful bird. He is one of my favorites in the bird series I have been working on of late. It might be the orange, maybe orange is turning into a new favorite color. Anyways, he is bright and happy and reminds me that there are plenty of reasons to be cheerful.

He is over in the Paper Pie shop now. Speaking of orange, I received my organic cotton ditzy floral Spoonflower samples that I showed you here. They turned out quite nice and I'll show you them next. Signing off now, have a lovely week.
