Liz & Kalli #40 Ten

Hi there and welcome to the Tuesday art project, coming to you on Friday this week. This week's word is ten in honor of 2010! Liz's contribution is on the top and Kalli's is on the bottom.

*Liz

The word ten really just begs for a list of some kind, so I did my favorite movies of all time. I think this list is pretty revealing and all over the place. You can see that I don't have exotic taste really when it comes to movies. I love offbeat and dark humor, the occasional tear jerker, and Joel and Ethan Coen of course.

*Kalli

This isn't really something I "made," so much as a work in progress outline of things I hope to do this year: in 2010 I'd like to contribute to at least 10 different charities or organizations by volunteering my time, effort or money. These are the organizations I've already started to deal with, and I hope to find a variety of others throughout the year. I think it's important to spread love and generosity around as much as you can, and then it always seems to come back when you need it!

Awesome and worthy goal, Kalli! You put my movie list to shame :)

Happy Tote

 

I've been wanting to work on this little happy, fun tote ever since I made this cheerful bag. I love this one too, and I'm not sure which is my favorite, they are both equally favorited by me. It's too hard to choose which is better. This bag has a special purpose so I won't be selling it in the WonderFluff shop, I just wanted to show you what I have been working on.

 

On a completely unrelated note, Ryan and I rented all three Godfather movies from Netflix. I'm pretty sure I may be one of about four people on the face of the earth that has never seen them, or at least maybe the first and most famous first one from the Seventies. We watched it a few weeks back and I actually fell asleep 20 minutes before the end. Ryan, who had predicted beforehand that I would fall asleep, was very disappointed in me. So I am thinking that for the next two days we are going on a Godfather movie watching marathon and we will pay Francis Ford Coppola the respect he deserves.

Movie Night

Ryan has been working like a dog for pretty much the last month, and in the last week I have hardly seen him at all. He crawls into bed somewhere around 2 am and says hi, and I kiss him goodbye when I leave in the morning for work. So when he actually made it home at 5 pm yesterday, we decided that we needed to go on a date. Since we have been missing our weekly Saturday matinees, we thought we'd go see a movie. After dinner at Don Antonio's, we went to see Duplicity. I'll admit that the main motivator for me was easy-on-the-eyes Clive Owen, but it is a pretty good film as well. It starts with one of the funniest opening sequences that I have ever seen and it has a nice understated sense of humor all throughout. Clive Owen and Julia Roberts have a believable chemistry. I can't even tell you the last time that I watched Julia Roberts in a movie. It may be The Mexican or Ocean's Eleven, which this movie reminded me a lot of. It's the same sort of stylish, spy movie with a humorous bend. Very entertaining indeed. An unexpected plus was Paul Giamatti in an entirely different role as corporate CEO, he was great as always. I love his Miles in Sideways which is one of my favorite films of all time. All in all, Duplicity will not change your life with it's profoundness, but it is a fun way to spend a couple of hours. 

Round Stripes

I did this painting the other night while watching Brideshead Revisited. I like the optical illusion quality of it. I can't decipher if it is flat or cylindrical. The stripes elongate the whole piece but the small squares on the inside are making the shapes sort of round. That's a different color palette for me too and I find it quite agreeable. Brideshead was a bit of a yawner but I did enjoy the score. Kalli sent me a CD of piano music a few weeks back and some of the music from the movie was included. So it does have that going for it, which is nice.

Blast From the Past

Our awesome neighbors recently bought a 1979 Fiat convertible and asked us if we'd like to borrow it and take it for a spin sometime. Would we? Of course we would. So yesterday Ryan and I drove the little cute thing up to Sunset Blvd and had breakfast at The Griddle Cafe. Not only was it so fun driving around in a vintage Italian convertible but the breakfast was crazy delicious. Since the car has been around for 30 years it has a few quirks, such as no power steering and every time Ryan used the blinker the hazard lights would come on. So we had many a laugh and a lot of fun.

 

After we ate breakfast we went to see Revolutionary Road. It was amazing from a visual standpoint. I need to watch it again just to study the sets. I loved all of the furniture and all of Kate's character April's clothes. I loved all of Leo's character Frank's clothes too. Overall I would say the movie was good, not great. The story derails a bit in spots, but the ending is done well and helps to tie it all up. I've been thinking of it a lot today so it has stuck with me a bit.

 

When we were waiting to see the movie we were snapping photos of a display of vintage concession food packages. The graphics were so simple and fun back in the day. I love this one above because the candy is called Delights and because the color and type is top notch. When we were leaving the theater I snapped a shot of this awesome 70s era conversion van. I'm sure I have some warped and romanticized view of the past, but it seems like ordinary, pedestrian objects had a lot more style back then. Alas.

Stained Glass

I worked on this painting last night and it looks a bit like stained glass to me. I like the idea of taking a symmetrical design and drawing it with imperfection. It's a nice contrast and almost creates and illusion like quality. I'm also really obsessed with color and unexpected palettes. I'm thinking of doing a print for this one with my brand new Epson R1900. We got it a few weeks ago and we were in serious need of a new one. I had been using the 1280 since school and the print heads here completely clogged and it had forgotten how to load paper. It was completely useless. We have this new one now, and it seems great so far. I have not used it much yet but we did print one of our engagement photos and it had superb clarity and color. There is also a tray for CD printing, fun!

In other news, Ryan and I went to see Slumdog Millionaire yesterday and I have to say we were a bit disappointed. I know we are probably 2 out of the 12 people in the world that don't love that movie. I just expected it to be more subtle instead of the Hollywood Blockbuster that it feels, looks and sounds like. Two perks though, the cinematography and the story itself are both quite good. In fact, I just saw that Slumdog won the Oscar for Best Cinematography. So at least it has that going for it, which is nice.
